New Zealand Hostels
The
backpacking market is extremely important to New Zealand and the
industry is very competitive across many fronts including accommodation.
What this means for backpackers heading to New Zealand is an abundance
of good, clean, very reasonably priced accommodation to be found
the length and breadth of the country.
For
those new to the hostelling environment, accommodation in hostels
is normally on a 'shared room' basis where you can be sharing
a room with any number of people. Normally, the more people in
a room the cheaper the cost of the room per night. It is not uncommon
to be sharing a room with anything from 4 to 10 other people.
Hostels normally have limited numbers of more private accommodation
( 2-bed rooms), but it pays to reserve these rooms if you know
you are going to be in a particular place over a particular time,
and obviously these will be more expensive (although somewhat
cheaper than more mainstream accommodation options). Amenities
such as toilet and shower facilities, as well as cooking facilities,
are shared amongst all the guests.
The backpacking scene in New Zealand can get quite crowded when
it comes to accommodation, particularly over the summer months
(December to March), so book ahead to avoid disappointment when
you get there.
