Immigration Overview, page 1
Entrepreneurs
The Entrepreneur category is
aimed at people who have the ability to create industry or business
within Canada thereby contributing to the economy and job creation.
Canadian immigration determines an entrepreneur to have the following
attributes:
- Has both the ability and the intention to invest/create a
business in Canada, and has a net worth of at least C$300,000
- Will make a contribution and be an asset to the Canadian economy
- Will be in a position to employ at least one Canadian citizen
- Will be directly involved in the daily operation of the business

The Entrepreneur applicant will also be assessed on a points system
where the qualifying mark is currently set at 35 points. Applicants
will be assessed on factors such as their age, their education,
business experience, knowledge of English or French, and their overall
suitability to Canadian life.
As opposed to the Investor category, there are
some conditions placed on applicants accepted under the Entrepreneur
category. Namely, the applicant must buy or establish a business
in Canada, and it should be established within two years of entering
Canada. It is also expected to create a job for a Canadian citizen
and contribute to the Canadian economy. You will be expected to
meet regularly with immigration officials to ensure that these
conditions are being met.
Self-Employed
A person wishing to migrate to Canada under the
Self-Employed category essentially is expected to demonstrate
that they are able to create or purchase a business in Canada,
and have the resources and talent to support themselves through
that business. It is also required that the through that business,
the applicant will make a significant contribution to the economy,
cultural or artistic life of Canada.

Applicants are assessed through the points system
where the minimum number of points needed to qualify is 35. Factors
such as age, experience, education, language ability, and suitability
to Canadian life are all assessed. While no investment funds are
required under this category, the applicant will need to demonstrate
that they have enough funds to support themselves until an income
is generated, and that the business they intend to practice in
Canada will support them and make an economic contribution to
Canada. In areas of occupation where licencing is required (such
as medical or teaching), licencing requirements must be met before
the application can be approved.
The above information has been a basic overview only of some of
the immigration processes for those wishing to move to or visit
Canada. We at Overseas Experience do not give personal advice
or information about specific immigration matters so we strongly
urge you to contact your local Embassy or Consulate, or recognized
third-party agents, for professional advice before applying for
a particular visa or permit. A good place to start is at the Canadian
Immigration website. Good luck with your move!
