How to enter the U.S. Green Card Lottery

Entering the Green Card Lottery is a reasonably simple procedure that most people who meet the minimum educational requirements, and who have a reasonably good grasp of the English language, should be able to complete on their own. Having said that, it is estimated that every year approximately 25% of all the applications received for the Green Card Lottery are rejected for not being complete, or for being completed incorrectly. Such applications are not returned to the applicants to be fixed up and re-submitted, they are simply discarded. Therefore it pays to ensure that you fill out the application carefully, and get help to do so if required. Applications can only be made through electronic submission, as paper submissions will not be accepted.

One word of caution however: there have been many instances of websites and other organisations masquerading as official U.S. Immigration representatives requiring that you pay money up front to enter the U.S Green Card Lottery. The Green Card Lottery is free to enter, and has always been that way. Be wary of any website or consultant who suggests that you need to pay money to enter the lottery. Of course, you may wish to pay a consultant to assist you to fill out the forms correctly if you feel that you need help in that area, but all the information that you require to enter the Green Card Lottery can be found through the links on this website, and entry to the Lottery itself is completely free.

Only one application can be made for each person, regardless of who actually submits the application. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the more applications that you submit the greater the chance of winning. It is quite the opposite. Any person found to be submitting more than one application will have all of their applications rejected immediately. To submit an application you need to simply fill out the form on the U.S. Green Card Official Site (which is only online from about September through to December). Once you have filled out the form and submitted it, you will be issued an electronic notification upon receipt of the application and your application will be issued a unique identification number. It is this number that you hope will be selected by the computer when the draw is made. Husbands and wives can submit an application separately if they both meet the eligibility criteria. If one is selected then the other one receives a permit by default, so in this situation couples can effectively double their chances of success.
