The U.S. Green Card Lottery (5)

<< back to Green Card Lottery, page 1

Applications to the Green Card Lottery can only be made electronically using the web-based form on the U.S. Green Card Official Site. You cannot download the application form and save it in another format (such as Microsoft Word) for completion at a later date. The form, being web-based in nature, is in two parts and can only be filled out online. One method around this, if you are unsure about filling out the form ‘live’, is to take screenshots (or print the form) to fill out manually at home as something of a practice run. You can then come back and copy the information into the web form when you are comfortable with your answers. This is particularly handy if you don’t have continuous and ready access to the Internet.

Full instructions for filling out the form will be available on the Green Card Lottery website closer to the time that applications will be accepted. If you send the form in error, or submit photographs that do not conform to the correct specifications, then the system will automatically reject your application. You can however resubmit the form once you sort out the problem. The system is intelligent enough to be able to tell the difference between a multiple send of an application due to technical problems as opposed to fraudulent multiple submissions in an effort to have a better chance of winning. If you receive a submission receipt after submitting your form then the information on that form is considered complete and there is nothing you can do from that point to change your application. If, for any reason, subsequent checking of your application reveals incorrect or missing information, then your application will be rejected and you may not reapply. If you do not receive an automatic submission receipt then you can assume that the application has not been received and you can re-submit. Bear in mind that any error messages or submission receipts can take a while to return to the computer from where you send your application so, if possible, it is wise to send the application from a computer where you can have full access for a couple of hours.
When can you apply to the U.S. Green Card Lottery?

Normally applications for submission to the Green Card Lottery are only accepted during the two months stated on the official Green Card website, and you should be able to see information about that particular year from the official website from September onwards. It pays to keep a close eye on that website as the time draws near so that you can have time to submit your application and to understand any particular regulations that are required for that particular year. Note also that it makes no difference if you submit your entry early within the allotted time or at the last minute on the last day. As long as your submission is correct and is submitted within the approved dates then you have as much chance of success as any other applicant. It would be unwise to rush your application thinking that it is first-come, first-served just in case you make a mistake with your application and you are disqualified.
