What does it cost
to enter the U.S. Green Card Lottery?
Remember that the Green Card Lottery is free
to enter. No fees are payable to the U.S. government
for entry to the lottery but there may be fees applicable for
processing your visa, but only if you win. The Lottery is completely
run by the U.S. government and no third parties are contracted
to provide any services. The only time that you should consider
paying any money for assistance to enter the Green Card Lottery
is if you anticipate having difficulties preparing your application
correctly and wish to pay someone to help you. Even with this
in mind most people will find that the application form is very
simple and easy to understand and, if you give yourself enough
time to prepare the document and read the instructions first,
you should not need to pay for any assistance what so ever. |

If you do pay for the services of someone else to assist you with
your application remember that each correct application will have
the same chance of success in the Green Card Lottery as any other
– do not be misled into thinking that you stand a better chance
of success if you pay for the services of any person or any organisation.
Remember also that you are only permitted to enter one application
per person – any more than that and all your applications
will be disqualified. Given the fact that all submissions are now
electronic the chances of getting caught for those who wish to game
the system are much greater than ever. You can however submit a
new application every year if you are unsuccessful, as long as you
still meet the eligibility criteria. The most important changes
every year are which countries are eligible so just because you
are eligible one year it doesn’t mean that you can automatically
apply every year. Check the U.S.
Green Card Official Site for each years qualifications.
Dealing with fraudulent sites
The U.S. immigration authorities have done their best to crack down
on unscrupulous website operators who try to scam would-be applicants
into thinking that they need to pay to enter the U.S. Green Card
Lottery or that they have a better chance of success by using their
services. The simple truth however is that they will never be able
to keep up with the myriad of ways that these sites will come up
with to part people from their money. You do not, under any circumstances,
have to pay to enter the Lottery and your chances of being successfully
chosen are no greater if you submit your application yourself or
pay someone else to do it for you (as long as all the information
is correct if you submit your application yourself). If you think
you have been scammed or misled in any way by any organisation or
website then you must report them to the authorities as soon as
possible. The longer you leave it unreported the more chance these
charlatans will remain in business to take money from other people.
The authorities want to clean up the whole industry around the Green
Card Lottery, but they need your help to do so. |
