Submitting photographs
with your Green Card Application
All photographs that are required need to be taken recently and
if applying under a spouse’s citizenry, then photographs of
your spouse and any dependent, natural, or legal children, whether
or not they reside with you or are intended to migrate with you
to the U.S., need to be included as well. A separate photograph
is required for each person meeting these criteria. Do not submit
a group photo – your application will be rejected immediately.
You may submit photographs taken with a digital camera, or those
taken with film and then subsequently scanned into digital form.

Either way, photos must be submitted
in digital form and must conform to the following specifications (but always check on the official Green Card website for the latest specifications):
-
Photographs must be in the JPEG format
( here's
a link for more information). This is a type of file format
for image files. When saving your photo’s, you’ll
normally be presented with a ‘file type’ to choose
from, of which JPEG should be one of the choices.
-
The photographs must be either in colour
or grayscale – most image software can convert images
to either of these options, or your local photo outlet should
be able to do the same with a photo that you provide.
-
The size of the digital photo must conform
to certain specifications. If the image is taken from a digital
photograph then it must be 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high
and must be of 24-bit or 8-bit colour or grayscale, and cannot
be more than 62.5 Kb in size. Again, most image manipulation
software can help you accommodate these specifications or
your local photo shop should be able to help.
-
If you decide to scan the photo then
it must not be any more than 5cm by 5cm (2 inches by
2 inches) in size and it must be scanned at a resolution
of 150 dpi (dots per inch) with the same colour depths
of either 24 or 8-bit colour or grayscale. As with digital
photo’s, scanned prints must be no more than 62.5
Kb.

As well as the technical specifications governing
the photographs there are also specific rules about how the applicants
in the photographs should be presented:
- Each applicant or subject should have their own photo. No
group photo’s are allowed.
- The subject of the photo must be facing directly into the
camera with the face of the subject making up at least 50%
of the photograph’s area.
- Keep the background simple. Preferably the subject should
be photographed against a light, mono-coloured background.
- The subject should not be wearing any hats, sunglasses (normal
glasses are acceptable as long as the face can be clearly
seen), or any other items that may detract from seeing the
face clearly. There may be some exceptions due to religious
beliefs but check on the official site with regards to the
final word on those issues.
- All photographs must be in sharp focus and of a reasonable
photographic standard.
