New Zealand Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday Visa is a popular option for many people visiting New Zealand to fund their travels. For citizens of those countries that are participants in the scheme with New Zealand a Working Holiday Visa enables those who qualify to work and travel within New Zealand for up to one year. These visas are not unlimited in their number and only so many are issued within any one year. Once the yearly allocation has been reached applications are closed until the next yearly intake.

At this stage there is no information on work visas for citizens from the United States through the New Zealand Immigration Service however there are third-party agencies that can organise such visas – these come at a cost however.

There are some rules and regulations from New Zealand Immigration concerning the Working Holiday Visa, most notably:
  • You must be aged between 18 and 30 years of age

  • This must be your first time in New Zealand under the Working Holiday scheme (you can have visited New Zealand previously though)

  • You must not have any dependant children

  • You must provide evidence of sufficient funds to support your stay, and prove that you have the means to purchase a ticket out of the country. At the time of writing the sufficient funds amount is NZ$4200.
You cannot accept full-time, permanent employment under this visa. You can however apply from within New Zealand to have your category of visa changed if your circumstances with regard to employment change and you wish to remain in the country.

**Update**

Now Finnish citizens can apply for a working holiday visa in New Zealand. Under a new agreement, up to 200 Finnish young people aged between 18 and 30 can apply each year for a year long working holiday stay in New Zealand. Contact your nearest Finnish or New Zealand Consulate for more details.
