4/ Invest in your luggage

Most people view their suitcase as simply a means to an end, but don’t overlook the convenience and versatility of well-designed, sturdy and distinctive luggage. The main things I find useful are:
  • Separate compartments for things like shoes and a suit

  • Expandable, so I can use the same luggage irrespective of how much I’m bringing with me

  • Easily accessible pockets from the outside to store important papers or other such items

  • Built in wheels and a sturdy handle (it makes life so much easier if you can comfortably drag your suitcase instead of having to carry it – even over short distances)

  • Distinctiveness – you should be able to spot your luggage easily on the airport terminal carousel, and the more distinctive it is, the less likely it will get lost (or stolen) and remain that way. Plaster it with stickers if need be.

  • Lockable – make sure that your entire suitcase can be locked down and sealed, particularly if you intend on travelling in some of the less secure world regions (If you’re traveling with a backpack with it’s many zips and pockets, think about buying a ‘cover all’ bag to prevent tampering).

5/ Personal organizer for your papers and money

When traveling you’ll normally want to access the same documents and papers over and over again as you pass through the increasing myriad of security checkpoints at airports and other ports. A neck holder for these documents is an incredibly valuable asset. Essentially it means that you can keep your hands free to hold carry-on baggage (or food, or a child etc) as you approach the security gate, and you don’t have to frantically search all your pockets trying to locate your boarding pass or passport. Similarly, you can get neck wallets for your money that you can tuck inside your clothing for extra security. Traveler hot spots like train and bus stations, for example, can be notorious hunting grounds for pickpockets and other opportunists. Don’t make it easy for them. 6/ Wheeled fold up carry frame for your hand luggage

This is something that you never knew you needed until you’ve tried it for the first time. A simple fold-up frame with wheels that you can use to put your carry luggage on and wheel it around an airport or along streets to your hotel or train station. It doesn’t matter even if you only have small bags to carry, and even for a short distance, you’ll be amazed at how much easier life can be with one of these contraptions. With a few bungee cords you can strap the frame to your bag when checking the item in at the airport so they can be checked in together as one item (or they are often small enough to be packed in your larger suitcase with little effort if the airline won’t allow you to check it in as hand luggage). They are so light that you won’t be sacrificing much in the way of carry-on weight for the convenience of bringing one along, and you will be glad that you did. Click here for some examples
