7/ Travel alarm clock

Self-explanatory, but often overlooked. Buy yourself a small, lightweight, travel alarm clock – you might not need to (or want to) use it often, but it is invaluable to have when you do need it. If you want to buy one online, check out a few here

8/ Good toiletry bag

Great for keeping all of your toiletries in the one place and organised. It might seem like a complete overkill to have an organizer for all things toiletry-related, but you’d be pleasantly surprised how much easier it is to carry and use your everyday essentials. You can buy packs that come ready stocked with travel-sized items which means you don’t have to carry large bottles of shampoos, toothpaste and other items with you (and you can always restock from the hotel when you’re running low!). You can find a number of options for a good toiletry bag here

9/ Clothes compressor bags

Believe it or not, there is an art to packing clothes. If you’ve ever traveled with an Italian, you’ll see how they can pack a cotton shirt into an over packed backpack and remove it a week later without a crease or crinkle to be seen. While compressor bags can’t guarantee you’ll be a fashion icon, they can keep your clothes clean, relatively wrinkle-free, and offer you much more space to pack more things. Have a look at the range available at Magellan's

10/ A pen!

The simplest of all my essential items to bring, but the one I forget most often. Before you leave the house, pick up a pen and put it in a pocket or a place where it will be with you for the duration of your flight. I’ve lost track of the amount of times I’ve needed to beg a pen from a fellow passenger because mine was buried deep in the overhead compartment. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make all the difference!

Well that’s my top-ten list of travel accessories that certainly have made a difference to the quality and enjoyment of my travels. It’s hard to pare them down to just 10 when you need to think of other items like travel adaptors, headache tablets, sewing kit, batteries, padlocks for your bag, data cables if travelling with computers, phone chargers, telephone calling cards and the list goes on. Whatever you bring with you though, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable journey.
