U.K. Teaching Jobs

The U.K. is a popular destination for teachers looking to expand their horizons be it through a permanent move to the U.K., or just an extended working holiday. While the U.K has reasonably tough immigration policies there are plenty of opportunities for those who meet the criteria within the education industry. One of the good things about looking for work in the U.K. is that schools there are well used to taking on foreign teachers and have an extremely open mind about such matters. Your skills and experience from overseas are often looked upon as an asset rather than a hindrance.

For those looking at a working holiday in the U.K. there is a category of working holiday visa in which the U.K. has an agreement with a number of other countries for those aged from 18 – 30. For those outside of this category or those who wish to migrate to the U.K. on a permanent basis the rules can be somewhat varied and complicated. If you’re outside of the U.K. or E.E.A. and are looking to gain a teaching job and immigration sponsorship your chances will be decidedly slim. Although there are many opportunities in the U.K. there are also many people chasing those opportunities and employers will be much more likely to choose someone already in the country with the appropriate immigration papers than accept someone unseen and be tied up with all the paperwork necessary for that applicant to legally work in the U.K.

Unless your qualifications and experience are highly sought after it is unlikely (but certainly not impossible) that you will succeed in gaining sponsorship this way. If you do adopt this approach, think carefully about how you approach teaching institutions and how you present your qualifications. While the Internet offers you a valuable vehicle for delivering your applications en-masse to schools all over the U.K. with relative ease, it’s worth bearing in mind that you may be just one amongst many, many people who use the same method to canvass for jobs. In order to stand out from the crowd you need to be a little bit different. Another thing to remember is that schools may receive many such applications and may not welcome unsolicited C.V.’s through the mail.

If you’re already in the U.K. finding a teaching job should be somewhat easier. There are many avenues available to you including online job banks, newspapers, and employment agencies. If you use an employment agency, be wary of any that charge for their services. There is absolutely no requirement for a job seeker to pay for employment services from an agency as the agency receive their payments from the employer after a successful placement. Think very carefully about the services you are to receive from any agency before you part with any money.
